The situation is drawing attention to how operational traffic decisions, when introduced without corresponding pedestrian infrastructure, can undermine both mobility and road safety.

The latest concerns emerged after authorities permitted right-turn movements from the Gandhi Road–Kamarajar Salai approach towards Peerkankaranai. The change has altered traffic patterns at the intersection, resulting in increased vehicle movements from multiple directions and making it significantly more difficult for people on foot to navigate the crossing. Residents living near the junction say motorists are increasingly exploiting the revised traffic arrangement to perform unauthorised U-turns and enter connecting roads, creating additional conflict points. While improving connectivity remains essential, they argue that traffic circulation plans must be supported by dedicated pedestrian phases, clearly segregated turning movements and stronger enforcement to prevent rule violations. Road users also point to vehicles frequently occupying pedestrian crossing markings, reducing the visibility and effectiveness of designated crossing areas. Without protected signal cycles for pedestrians, many are forced to weave through moving traffic, increasing exposure to potential crashes. Transport planners have long maintained that signalised intersections serving high pedestrian volumes require equal priority for non-motorised users rather than focusing exclusively on vehicular throughput. The location functions as an important entry point into Chennai and experiences sustained traffic throughout the day, particularly during office hours and weekends. Experts say junctions of this scale require continuous traffic monitoring because even minor operational changes can have cascading effects across adjoining corridors, affecting travel time, public transport reliability and emergency response.

Infrastructure professionals further observe that the movement of heavy vehicles through complex urban intersections demands stricter traffic channelisation. Unregulated turning movements involving large vehicles can reduce sightlines for pedestrians and increase collision risks, particularly where road space is already constrained. The growing debate around New Perungalathur traffic reflects a wider challenge facing expanding Indian cities: balancing faster vehicle movement with safer public spaces. As Chennai continues investing in transport infrastructure, mobility experts believe future junction upgrades should integrate pedestrian-first design, intelligent traffic signalling and stronger enforcement so that improved connectivity does not come at the expense of road user safety.
