Chennai’s Pattabiram neighbourhood is witnessing renewed public concern over traffic circulation and unfinished junction improvements around the road over bridge constructed to replace a railway level crossing, with residents seeking clarity on pending mobility measures that they say are essential for safer and more efficient movement. Several years after work commenced on the Pattabiram Road Over Bridge, residents and commuter groups say unresolved traffic arrangements near the police station junction have altered long-established travel patterns across the locality. The bridge, developed to eliminate delays caused by the former railway crossing on the Chennai–Tiruvallur High Road, was envisioned as a major intervention to improve connectivity between Pattabiram, Tirunindravur and adjoining residential areas.However, the Pattabiram Bridge Access issue has increasingly become a subject of debate among local stakeholders. Changes in vehicle movements have meant that motorists travelling towards the railway station and surrounding neighbourhoods are now required to cover additional distance before making permitted turns, increasing travel time and creating inconvenience during peak periods.
According to representatives of citizen organisations and commuter associations, a traffic roundabout that had earlier been discussed as part of the post-construction arrangement has yet to materialise. Residents argue that such an intervention could simplify movements at the busy junction and reduce unnecessary detours for thousands of daily users. The road over bridge project, sanctioned more than a decade ago and subsequently executed at a cost exceeding ₹78 crore, was intended to address bottlenecks created by the level crossing serving the Pattabiram Military Siding line. While the grade separator has removed interruptions caused by train movements, local mobility experts note that infrastructure success increasingly depends on how effectively surrounding road networks and intersections are redesigned. Urban planners point out that transport projects cannot be evaluated solely by engineering completion. Junction management, pedestrian safety, accessibility and efficient turning movements are equally important elements of people-centric mobility. In rapidly expanding suburban areas, poorly integrated traffic layouts can create new challenges even as older bottlenecks are eliminated.
