Schools and colleges in Chennai and Tiruvallur will remain closed on November 2 as authorities take precautionary measures ahead of forecast thunderstorms, strong winds and very heavy rain linked to a storm over the Bay of Bengal, according to a report by Dinamalar.
Chennai District Collector Malathi Helen ordered a one-day holiday for all schools and colleges in the district as the northeast monsoon intensified. The Tiruvallur district administration separately announced a holiday for educational institutions because of the heavy-rain warning.
An orange alert has been issued for Chennai and Tiruvallur, with the two districts expected to receive very heavy rain accompanied by thunder, lightning and strong winds. The closures are intended to reduce the movement of students and staff during potentially hazardous weather conditions.
The warning has direct implications for daily urban operations in the two districts, where heavy rain can affect road travel, public transport, drainage systems and access to educational institutions. The report did not provide details on transport cancellations, shelter arrangements or any additional restrictions on movement.
Rainfall with thunder and lightning is also possible in Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Vellore and the Nilgiris on November 2. Other parts of Tamil Nadu may receive moderate rain in isolated locations, according to the report.
The school and college holiday applies for one day in Chennai and Tiruvallur. Further decisions will depend on weather conditions and announcements from the respective district administrations.
