Chennai Metro Six Stations Push Back Full Connectivity
Chennai’s first operational stretch of Phase II is ready for passenger services, but six stations remain unfinished, pushing full corridor access towards the end of September. The 14.6-km Poonamallee Bypass–Vadapalani section has cleared the required safety process, yet its launch remains dependent on a Union government inauguration date. The delay leaves western Chennai commuters dependent on increasingly congested road corridors despite major metro infrastructure being substantially ready.
The unfinished stations are Saligramam, Avichi School, Alwarthirunagar, Valasaravakkam, Karambakkam and Alapakkam Junction. These stations form a significant part of the corridor’s planned access network, particularly for neighbourhoods where road-based travel remains vulnerable to congestion and long journey times. The latest construction target puts completion at September-end, followed by inspection by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety before passenger access can begin. This means the Chennai Metro opening timetable remains exposed to another layer of testing and certification even after the main corridor received operational clearance.
Four stations present a more complex engineering challenge because they sit within the double-decker section. Roof installation requires power shutdowns where overhead electrical infrastructure creates safety constraints. Finishing works also include station entrances, cladding, toilets and flooring, indicating that the remaining work extends beyond basic structural construction.The four double-decker stations are strategically important because they are planned as interchange points between Phase II Corridor 4, linking Lighthouse with Poonamallee Bypass, and Corridor 5 between Madhavaram and Sholinganallur. Their completion therefore affects more than local station access. It also determines how effectively Chennai’s wider metro network can support cross-city journeys without forcing passengers back onto roads. The Chennai Metro delay also raises a broader infrastructure question: how quickly can public investment translate into usable urban mobility? Safety clearance removes a critical technical barrier, but incomplete stations and an unresolved inauguration schedule continue to postpone benefits for residents.
There is another practical concern. Once trains start operating, construction access around active platforms will become more restricted. That could make final works slower and prolong construction impacts around stations that are already being developed in densely settled urban areas. For western Chennai, the priority now is not simply commissioning the line. Authorities will need to complete the remaining stations safely, coordinate construction with live operations and ensure pedestrian access, road restoration and interchange facilities keep pace. A metro corridor delivers its strongest public value when infrastructure, accessibility and surrounding streets become usable together.
