Chennai’s largest public transport investment has crossed a significant construction milestone, with more than half of the city’s second metro network now completed, marking an important step in reshaping mobility across emerging residential districts, business centres and technology corridors. The progress is expected to influence commuting patterns, support transit-oriented growth and reduce dependence on private vehicles in one of India’s most congested metropolitan regions.
According to updated project data, the 116.1-km Chennai Metro Phase 2 network has achieved overall physical progress of 52.55 per cent. Spread across three corridors, the ₹63,246-crore programme is designed to add 118 stations, including an extensive underground section intended to improve access to densely populated neighbourhoods and established commercial zones. Urban planners say the expansion represents more than a transport project. By improving public mobility and connecting peripheral growth areas with employment centres, the Chennai Metro Phase 2 programme could influence housing markets, encourage mixed-use development and support more balanced urban expansion. Better access to public transport is also expected to ease pressure on road infrastructure and contribute to lower transport-related emissions over the long term.
Construction activities began in late 2020, while tunnel excavation commenced two years later. Underground works have already been completed in several central city locations, reflecting progress in some of the most technically demanding stretches. Elevated sections are advancing simultaneously, with track installation now underway across multiple segments. A senior official associated with the project indicated that operations on the first completed section linking western parts of the city are expected to commence ahead of the wider network rollout. Elevated corridors are targeted for completion by 2027, while underground stretches are scheduled to become operational in phases thereafter. Infrastructure experts note that large-scale transit systems increasingly play a critical role in supporting climate-resilient urban development. Efficient mass transportation can help cities manage rising populations, curb traffic congestion and create stronger links between educational institutions, industrial clusters and employment hubs.
The Chennai Metro Phase 2 network is expected to extend connectivity to several fast-growing neighbourhoods and information technology districts that currently depend heavily on road-based travel. However, experts also point out that the long-term success of the system will depend on seamless integration with buses, suburban rail services and last-mile mobility options to ensure equitable access for commuters across income groups.
