With the northeast monsoon approaching, residents of Velachery’s Tansi Nagar have renewed demands for the restoration of a key stormwater channel, warning that delayed maintenance of the macro canal could once again expose several low-lying neighbourhoods to flooding. The appeal highlights growing concerns over the condition of urban drainage infrastructure at a time when Chennai continues to invest in climate resilience while grappling with ageing water management assets.
The approximately 3.5-kilometre macro canal, running along the Velachery–Taramani Link Road, serves as an important drainage corridor linking surplus water from Velachery Lake and adjoining catchments to the Buckingham Canal. Beyond handling lake overflow, the channel also carries rainwater from surrounding residential areas, including parts of Velachery, Taramani, Adambakkam and Dhandeeswaram, making its operational efficiency critical during periods of intense rainfall. Residents’ associations argue that inadequate maintenance over several years has significantly reduced the canal’s carrying capacity. They contend that accumulated silt, debris, blocked inlets and physical encroachments have weakened the drainage network, increasing the likelihood of water spilling into nearby residential streets during heavy showers. For communities living in flood-prone pockets, even short spells of intense rainfall can disrupt mobility, damage homes and affect livelihoods.
The issue has recently been raised with elected representatives and senior government officials, with residents seeking coordinated intervention before seasonal rains intensify. According to officials familiar with the discussions, responsibilities are expected to be shared between the highways authority and the Water Resources Department. While road authorities are likely to address obstructions affecting water entry points along the roadway, the desilting of the macro canal itself is expected to be undertaken by the water management agency. Urban planners note that Chennai’s flood mitigation strategy increasingly depends not only on constructing new stormwater drains but also on maintaining existing natural and engineered waterways. Investments in drainage infrastructure can lose effectiveness if canals, feeder channels and lake outlets are not periodically cleared, particularly in rapidly urbanising neighbourhoods where impermeable surfaces accelerate runoff during cloudbursts.
Experts also point out that fragmented institutional responsibilities often delay preventive maintenance. Coordinated planning between civic agencies, highways departments and water resource authorities has become increasingly important as climate projections indicate more frequent episodes of high-intensity rainfall across coastal cities. Regular desilting, removal of illegal encroachments and protection of water conveyance corridors are widely regarded as cost-effective measures that reduce flood risks while extending the lifespan of urban infrastructure. For residents of Velachery and adjoining localities, timely restoration of the drainage channel represents more than a routine maintenance exercise. It is viewed as an essential safeguard against recurring monsoon disruption and a necessary step towards building a more resilient urban landscape. With pre-monsoon preparations underway across Chennai, the effectiveness and speed of inter-departmental action on the canal will be closely watched by communities that have repeatedly experienced flooding in recent years.
