A major agricultural export movement through Chennai has signalled a renewed push towards integrated freight transport, with thousands of tonnes of rice from Andhra Pradesh now reaching international markets through a coordinated rail-road-port logistics network. The development marks the return of large-scale covered-wagon cargo operations at a key inland freight terminal in north Chennai, highlighting the growing role of multimodal transport in improving supply chain efficiency across South India.

The latest shipment involves nearly 2,700 tonnes of rice sourced from farming regions in Andhra Pradesh and routed through an inland container facility in Chennai before being dispatched to overseas destinations. The cargo travelled hundreds of kilometres by rail before being transferred into shipping containers for final movement to Chennai Port and onward export.Logistics experts say the operation reflects a broader shift in India’s freight ecosystem, where policymakers and infrastructure agencies are increasingly encouraging cargo movement through interconnected transport modes rather than relying solely on road networks. Such systems reduce bottlenecks, improve cargo reliability and help optimise existing transport infrastructure.

The revival of BCN wagon handling at the Chennai terminal is particularly significant because it reactivates rail-based freight capacity that had remained largely unused for several years.
