Chennai is undertaking a city-wide frog survey to establish the first detailed baseline of its urban amphibian population, with researchers planning fieldwork across Greater Chennai Corporation limits. The exercise could offer an important measure of how shrinking habitats, polluted water, noise and rapid construction are reshaping the city’s lesser-known biodiversity.
Researchers have already recorded eight species during preliminary work, while earlier assessments have suggested that Chennai’s wider urban landscape could support at least 15 frog species. The gap between what is believed to exist and what has been systematically documented highlights a wider weakness in urban biodiversity planning: cities often map roads, buildings and drainage networks more closely than the living systems that depend on them. The Chennai frog survey will divide the corporation area into grids based on factors such as building density and green-space availability. Researchers plan to examine parks, open spaces, institutional campuses, wetlands, burial grounds, gardens and remaining vegetation, alongside smaller habitats such as stagnant pools, leaf litter and lake margins.
The timing is significant. Fieldwork is expected to focus largely on the monsoon, when amphibians become more active and breeding habitats expand. Teams will record species, numbers, habitat conditions and climatic factors, creating a baseline that can eventually show whether urbanisation is reducing or reshaping frog populations. For Chennai, that evidence has implications beyond biodiversity. Frogs and toads consume insects, while tadpoles occupy aquatic food webs. Their sensitivity to changes in water quality also makes them useful indicators of environmental stress. Poor oxygen conditions and chemical contamination can disrupt development, while degraded habitats can reduce breeding opportunities. Urban noise presents another less visible pressure. Traffic and construction can interfere with frog calls, which males use to attract mates. Artificial light may also alter behaviour and physiology. Research elsewhere has documented such effects, while observations from Chennai indicate that frog soundscapes may already be changing in some neighbourhoods.
The Chennai frog survey therefore offers a useful test of whether biodiversity can be incorporated into everyday urban decision-making. Protecting wetlands alone will not be enough if smaller water bodies, vegetation patches and connected habitats continue disappearing. Researchers may later involve schools and colleges through citizen science, widening the data network while building public awareness. The more important next step, however, will be translating the findings into planning standards so that drainage, roads, housing and redevelopment projects account for the ecological systems that make a resilient city function.
