Southern Railway has begun deploying modern Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches on the Yercaud Express operating between Erode and Chennai, marking another step in the gradual modernisation of intercity rail infrastructure in Tamil Nadu. The move is expected to improve passenger safety, enhance travel comfort and increase operational efficiency on one of the region’s important rail corridors, which supports daily commuters, business travellers and students.
The Erode–Chennai Central Yercaud Express commenced operations with the upgraded rake this week, while the return service is scheduled to transition to the new configuration from June 13. The change replaces ageing conventional coaches that have served the route for several decades. Rail experts note that the adoption of LHB coaches represents a wider shift across the Indian railway network towards safer and more resilient rolling stock. Built using technology originally developed in Germany and manufactured domestically, the coaches are engineered to withstand collisions more effectively and are designed to minimise the risk of coaches telescoping into one another during accidents.
The introduction of LHB coaches also brings operational advantages. The newer design allows trains to run at higher speeds while reducing vibrations and noise levels, contributing to a smoother journey for passengers. Improved seating layouts and enhanced fire-resistant materials further strengthen onboard safety standards. For Tamil Nadu’s urban and industrial centres, reliable rail connectivity remains critical to economic activity. Cities such as Chennai and Erode depend heavily on efficient passenger transport systems that connect manufacturing hubs, educational institutions and commercial districts. Upgrades to existing rail services can therefore deliver wider benefits beyond travel convenience by supporting labour mobility and reducing dependence on private vehicles.
