Chennai Airport Leads India In May Air Traffic Growth

Chennai Airport emerged as India’s busiest airport by passenger handling performance in May 2026, reflecting a sharp rise in domestic air travel during the summer holiday season. The latest aviation data shows strong passenger demand across major cities, highlighting how airport infrastructure is becoming increasingly important for regional connectivity, economic activity and urban mobility planning.

India’s domestic aviation sector recorded its highest monthly passenger volume in May, with airlines carrying more than 1.5 crore travellers across over one lakh flights. The increase marks continued expansion in air mobility as business travel, tourism and seasonal movement pushed demand higher compared with the previous year. The data places Chennai International Airport at the top among major airports for operational efficiency, achieving an on-time performance rate of 92.2 per cent. The airport was followed by major hubs in Kolkata, Hyderabad and Bengaluru, showing improved scheduling reliability across India’s aviation network. The performance of Chennai’s airport gains importance as the city continues to strengthen its position as a major industrial, technology and logistics centre. Better air connectivity supports business movement, employment opportunities and regional economic links, while also increasing pressure on surrounding transport systems and urban infrastructure.

Urban mobility experts note that rising passenger numbers require cities to look beyond airport expansion alone. Efficient public transport connections, last-mile accessibility and climate-sensitive infrastructure will become essential as metropolitan regions manage increasing travel demand.Aviation growth also brings environmental challenges. Airports and surrounding urban areas face the need to reduce emissions, improve energy efficiency and adopt cleaner mobility options for passengers and employees. Sustainable transport links between airports and city centres can play a key role in reducing dependence on private vehicles. The DGCA data also highlighted operational challenges within the sector. Flight delays affected more than 1.77 lakh passengers during May, while cancellations impacted over 63,000 travellers. Airlines provided compensation and support measures in response, underlining the importance of passenger-focused systems as traffic volumes increase.

Among airlines operating at major airports, IndiGo recorded the highest on-time performance at 82.8 per cent, followed by other major carriers. However, industry observers point out that long-term aviation resilience will depend on balancing capacity expansion with service quality, environmental responsibility and passenger experience. For Chennai, the latest numbers underline the growing role of aviation in shaping the city’s economic future. As passenger demand continues to rise, coordinated planning between airport authorities, transport agencies and urban policymakers will be crucial to ensure growth remains efficient, accessible and environmentally responsible.
