Chennai Adambakkam Station Delay Frustrates Commuters
Nearly three months after Chennai’s long-awaited Mass Rapid Transit System extension reached St Thomas Mount, passengers in Adambakkam are still unable to access rail services due to unresolved safety concerns at the local station. The delay highlights how design deficiencies and prolonged approval processes can undermine the benefits of major urban mobility investments intended to improve connectivity and reduce dependence on road transport.
Railway authorities have submitted a proposal seeking regulatory clearance for corrective works aimed at addressing an excessive gap between train coaches and the platform at Adambakkam MRTS station. The issue was identified during safety inspections conducted before passenger operations began on the Velachery-St Thomas Mount section.According to officials familiar with the matter, the proposed solution involves installing steel channels and specialised cement tiles to reduce the gap and improve passenger safety. Approval from railway safety authorities remains pending, preventing work from proceeding and leaving the station inaccessible despite the completion of the surrounding infrastructure.
The problem arises because the platform is located along a curved section of the track, creating a wider-than-normal distance between trains and the platform edge. Urban transport experts note that such interface issues, though technically manageable, can affect accessibility for elderly passengers, children and people with reduced mobility if not adequately addressed.The closure has become a source of frustration for residents who had expected direct access to MRTS services following the commissioning of the 4.5-kilometre extension in March. Trains currently operate through the station without stopping, with passengers instead relying on nearby stations to access the network.At present, around 86 MRTS services connect Chennai Beach and St Thomas Mount each day, while a smaller number continue to terminate at Velachery. Although the extension represents a significant milestone in strengthening east-west suburban connectivity, the inability to activate Adambakkam MRTS station has exposed the challenges of delivering fully functional transport infrastructure after years of construction.
The project itself has experienced a lengthy journey. Originally conceived in 2008, the extension encountered land acquisition hurdles and construction setbacks that stretched implementation over nearly two decades.Urban planners say reliable and accessible public transport remains critical to Chennai’s efforts to manage congestion, support equitable growth and encourage lower-carbon mobility choices. Delays in opening stations can diminish the wider social and environmental gains expected from such investments. For residents of Adambakkam, attention now turns to how quickly regulatory approvals can be secured and whether the remaining engineering works can finally bring the long-awaited Adambakkam MRTS station into regular passenger service.
