Chandigarh Police Wins President’s Police Colour for Modern Policing

Chandigarh Police has been approved for the President’s Police Colour, one of the highest honours conferred on a police organisation, after the Union Ministry of Home Affairs conveyed the President’s approval to the Chandigarh chief secretary on October 26.

The recognition follows proposals submitted by the Chandigarh administration on July 14 and September 28, 2026. According to the communication cited by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the honour acknowledges the force’s record in policing, law and order management, modernisation, emergency response and citizen services.

Chandigarh Police was reorganised on November 1, 1966, and operates under the motto “We Care for You”. The force has received one gallantry medal, 20 President’s Police Medals for Distinguished Service, 108 medals for Meritorious Service and 52 United Nations medals.

Its institutional record also includes the FICCI Smart Policing Award in 2017 for initiatives covering child safety, community policing, elderly safety, smart police stations and women’s safety. The force was ranked first nationally for speedy passport verification during 2023-24, according to the record submitted for the honour.

The police said they had managed 60,501 law and order events since 2009, including 2,582 events in 2025. The submitted record stated that no untoward incident was reported during the management of those 2025 events. The events included large public gatherings such as the Rose Festival, National Craft Mela and rallies.

Technology-led policing has become a central part of Chandigarh’s policing infrastructure. The Police Command and Control Centre was inaugurated on July 30, 2022. The city now has a network of 2,085 CCTV cameras integrated with traffic-management systems, adaptive traffic signals and automatic number-plate recognition.

The Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems has been implemented in all police stations, while the e-Beat application is operational across all 16 law-and-order police stations. The force has also established the Centre for Cyber Operations and Police Support, or CenCOPS, which supports cybercrime investigation, digital forensics, malware analysis and cyber-threat intelligence.

Other digital tools include e-Sakshya for electronic evidence and Chitra Khoji for image-based identification. These systems place Chandigarh’s recognition in the context of a wider shift from conventional policing towards integrated command centres, digital investigation and technology-assisted traffic management.

Emergency response is another component of the force’s submitted record. The average response time under the Emergency Response Support System, or 112, is recorded at four minutes and 33 seconds.

The force’s community-facing programmes include Samavesh Kendras, weekly Samvedna camps for public grievances and the Student Police Cadet Programme. The cadet programme has enrolled 600 students from 15 schools.

The President’s Police Colour is awarded to a police organisation rather than an individual officer. The Ministry of Home Affairs’ communication confirms the President’s approval; the material cited in the report does not specify the date or format of the formal presentation ceremony.
