Central Railway Undertakes Platform Unification at Dadar Station to Alleviate Congestion

Central Railway (CR) has initiated a significant infrastructure project aimed at enhancing passenger convenience and reducing congestion at Dadar station. The undertaking involves the unification of platforms 10 and 11 to facilitate seamless boarding and alighting for passengers traveling in the Kalyan direction.

CSMT and Churchgate stations

By adopting a double discharge platform model akin to those at CSMT and Churchgate stations, CR aims to streamline train operations and optimise space utilisation at one of Mumbai’s busiest railway hubs. Currently, Dadar station’s CR section comprises five platforms dedicated to managing suburban and long-distance train services. While platforms designated for fast trains also accommodate long-distance services, platform 8 caters to slow corridor trains heading towards Kalyan. Platforms 9 and 10 operate as island platforms, with platform 9 servicing slow trains to CSMT and Parel, while platform 10 serves Kalyan-bound fast trains. The decision to revamp platforms 10 and 11 stems from the existing gap between the Kalyan-bound fast track and platform 11, which serves as a terminus for long-distance and fast services originating or terminating at Dadar. A metal fencing currently separates platform 11 from the fast track, leading to congestion issues when trains simultaneously arrive at platforms 9 and 10.

To address these challenges, CR’s infrastructure upgrade plan includes the removal of the metal fencing between platform 11 and the Kalyan-bound fast track, as well as the relocation of utilities and stalls. By eliminating physical barriers and optimising space utilisation, the revamped platforms will enable Kalyan-bound fast trains to access both platforms, thereby enhancing operational efficiency and passenger experience. The initiative underscores CR’s commitment to modernising infrastructure and enhancing commuter facilities across Mumbai’s suburban railway network. By leveraging innovative design solutions and strategic planning, CR aims to mitigate congestion and improve the overall efficiency of train operations at Dadar station, a vital transportation hub serving millions of commuters daily. As construction activities progress, CR remains focused on minimising disruptions to regular train services and ensuring the timely completion of the platform unification project. The successful implementation of this initiative is expected to alleviate congestion, enhance passenger convenience, and contribute to the seamless functioning of Mumbai’s suburban rail network.
