Burari’s 7.1-km road corridor is set for an integrated upgrade after the Delhi government drew up a Rs 125-crore plan combining road reconstruction, a new drainage network and a central verge to address persistent waterlogging and connectivity problems in the area.
Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh inspected Burari Road and adjoining drainage works on Sunday and reviewed the proposed project with senior department officials. The plan covers the corridor from Outer Ring Road through Baba Colony and Nathupura to Hiranki.
Under the road component, the 3.2-km stretch between Outer Ring Road and Baba Colony, along with the Nathupura-Hiranki section, will be reconstructed with bituminous roads. The 3.9-km Baba Colony-Nathupura stretch will be developed as a reinforced cement concrete road at an estimated cost of Rs 39 crore. A central verge is also planned along the full 7.1-km corridor.
The accompanying drainage work is estimated to cost Rs 75 crore and will cover a 9.3-km network. The proposed works include drains on both sides of the road between Amrit Vihar and Bengali Colony, as well as drainage improvements on the Swaroop Nagar More-Burari Creek stretch.
The drainage work has already been tendered, according to the department. Road works are expected to be tendered within the next 10 days. The project is intended to address two connected infrastructure problems together rather than execute road resurfacing before drainage improvements are completed.
“The entire corridor will be upgraded in an integrated manner. From the Outer Ring Road through Baba Colony and Nathupura up to Hiranki, the road will be improved according to the requirements of each stretch, while drainage infrastructure will be strengthened simultaneously,” Singh said after the inspection.
The minister directed officials to coordinate the road and drainage works and maintain quality standards during execution. “Every stretch must be executed with proper planning and quality. The road and drainage works should be coordinated so that residents do not face repeated disruption and the infrastructure delivers a durable solution for Burari,” he said.
The department said the integrated approach would help prevent newly improved roads from being repeatedly dug up for drainage-related works. It is also intended to address road quality and waterlogging through a single coordinated programme across the corridor.
For residents, the works are expected to affect road conditions, drainage performance and movement along a busy north Delhi connection. Until reconstruction begins, the PWD will carry out regular water sprinkling on the affected stretches as a dust-control measure.
The next formal milestones are the tendering of the road works within the stated 10-day period and the execution of the drainage project after its tendering process. The department has not provided a completion timeline in the supplied announcement.
