Budge Budge Sports Complex Proposal Raises Fresh Questions Over BD Ground

A proposed sports complex announced by the Kolkata Port in Budge Budge has triggered fresh questions among residents after the century-old BD Ground was enclosed with large tin sheets, limiting access to a field long used for sport and community activities.

The proposal was displayed on a banner featuring an image of the planned complex. However, the available report does not provide details of the proposed site, project cost, construction timeline, facilities or approval status. The banner has prompted both cautious support and scepticism among residents, who are seeking clarity on whether the proposal will translate into a completed public sports facility.

BD Ground has been used by residents of Budge Budge for sports for more than 100 years, according to the report. Its enclosure led citizens to organise a public convention last week. The convention called for intervention from Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shantanu Thakur and West Bengal political authorities. Letters were sent seeking their intervention in the dispute over the ground.

The announcement of an alternative sports complex followed that mobilisation. Sujoy Das, a resident, said the proposed facility would be welcome if it was actually built, but questioned whether the banner represented a concrete commitment or an attempt to calm public anger over the loss of access to BD Ground. His comments reflect the central uncertainty surrounding the proposal: the report records the public display, but does not cite a formal project notification, approved plan or implementation schedule from the port authority.

Another local resident, Jaydeb Dutta, who is also an executive committee member of the BJP’s Diamond Harbour organisational district, said residents had sought the return of BD Ground as a playing field. He said the port had announced plans for a larger sports complex at another location in Budge Budge and expressed confidence that it would be built.

The dispute highlights the practical importance of open sports grounds in dense urban settlements. When a long-used field is enclosed, the impact is not limited to the loss of a parcel of land. Residents also lose an accessible space for organised sport, informal recreation and community activity unless an alternative is made available with comparable access and usable facilities.

For now, the Kolkata Port’s banner establishes a proposal but not a completed project. The next public-interest question is whether the port or another responsible authority will publish the proposed location, project scope, approvals and construction timeline. Those details will determine whether the announcement becomes a functioning sports complex or remains only a promise made amid opposition to the enclosure of BD Ground.
