BMC’s CCTV Surveillance to Combat Mumbai’s Illegal Dumping Menace

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is taking a proactive approach to tackle the growing problem of illegal dumping of construction and demolition debris in Mumbai. In a bid to curb this environmental menace, the civic body plans to install 117 CCTV cameras across four key wards: Andheri, Goregaon, Malad, and Borivali.

Illegal dumping has emerged as a major concern in Mumbai, with complaints about this issue ranking second only to potholes. The BMC has been working tirelessly to address the problem, with recent deep cleaning drives resulting in the removal of substantial amounts of debris from public spaces. However, the persistent nature of the issue has necessitated more stringent measures. The installation of CCTV cameras is expected to play a crucial role in deterring illegal dumping. By capturing footage of offenders, the BMC will be able to identify and penalize those responsible for defacing the city’s public spaces.

The cameras will be strategically placed in areas known for frequent dumping activities, allowing authorities to monitor the situation in real-time. The BMC has already identified specific locations within the four wards where illegal dumping is most prevalent. These include P North (Malad), K West (Andheri West), P South (Goregaon West), and R Central (Borivali). The data collected from the CCTV cameras will be accessible to civic staff through a mobile app, enabling them to respond promptly to any incidents of illegal dumping.

While the BMC has taken several steps to address the issue, including forming special squads to monitor dumping activities and introducing a debris on-call service, the problem persists. The installation of CCTV cameras represents a significant investment in technology that could prove to be a game-changer in the fight against illegal dumping. By leveraging the power of surveillance, the BMC aims to create a cleaner and more livable city for its residents.
