BMC Targets Flood Prevention at Haji Ali Dargah Underpass

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to construct a retaining wall around the pedestrian underpass (PUP) that forms the only access route to the shrine. This move follows the disruption caused by a flooding incident in April 2024, when high tide waters inundated the underpass, forcing the closure of the Dargah for several hours. The retaining wall, to be built on both sides of the underpass, is expected to safeguard the structure from high tide-induced flooding during the monsoon season. Civic officials emphasized that the wall would act as a barrier, preventing seawater from entering and ensuring that devotees could access the Dargah safely without dealing with waterlogged pathways.

In response to the April flooding, which left worshippers unable to reach the shrine, the BMC has accelerated plans to install the wall before the onset of the next monsoon season. A senior BMC official confirmed that the design and cost estimates for the wall are being prepared by construction giant Larson and Toubro (L&T). Though the project is still in the early stages, the BMC is keen on completing it as swiftly as possible to avoid future disruptions. The pedestrian underpass is part of Mumbai’s 10 km Coastal Road project, which features a total of around 20 such underpasses connecting key locations. While the PUPs offer much-needed connectivity, they are vulnerable to flooding during high tides. Civic officials have acknowledged that on days of exceptionally high tides, the underpass could be inundated, preventing access to the Dargah and other important locations.

In addition to the retaining wall, the BMC has also undertaken the construction of main stormwater drains along the Coastal Road’s Haji Ali stretch. These drains are intended to manage and divert seawater, reducing the risk of flooding and further ensuring that essential services like the underpass remain operational during monsoons. The BMC’s proactive approach highlights its commitment to improving infrastructure resilience in a city prone to flooding and tidal challenges, ensuring smoother access for both locals and tourists who frequent the revered Haji Ali Dargah.
