BMC Sets March Deadline for Demolition of Illegal Structures

In a bold move to address the growing issue of illegal constructions across Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has set a firm deadline for the completion of demolition actions by the end of March 2025. Additional Municipal Commissioner Dr. Ashwini Joshi, in a meeting on Friday, instructed civic officials to expedite the removal of encroachments and warned that any delays or obstructions in the process would result in strict disciplinary measures.

The review meeting, held at BMC headquarters, focused on the ongoing efforts to combat unauthorized constructions that have plagued the city. Joshi was joined by Assistant Commissioner for Encroachment Removal Vinayak Vispute and other senior officials. In the meeting, she emphasised the urgency of the task, calling for a proactive approach to be adopted from January to March 2025 to clear illegal structures from the city.

“The deadline for completing the demolition of illegal constructions is set for March 2025,” Joshi stated, urging the officials to create a detailed timeline for all operations. She also ordered that adequate resources, including manpower from zonal police officers, be allocated to assist in the demolition process to ensure the swift removal of encroachments. Joshi also highlighted the financial penalties involved in dealing with unauthorized constructions. Citing Section 152(A) of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 1888, she reminded officials that unauthorised constructions attract a hefty penalty of 200 percent property tax. As part of the demolition actions, penalty notices must be issued, and procedures for levying fines should begin promptly.

In addition to the demolition efforts, Joshi directed the appointment of legal experts to strengthen the BMC’s case in court for handling legal disputes related to illegal constructions. This move aims to streamline the legal process and enhance the effectiveness of the civic body’s actions against encroachments. With Mumbai continuing to struggle with encroachments and illegal constructions in various parts of the city, the BMC’s decision to set a clear deadline for the demolition of these structures is seen as an important step towards reclaiming public space and ensuring compliance with building regulations. The civic body’s commitment to strict action is expected to send a strong message to builders and property owners who have been flouting construction laws.
