Bhopal Dengue Cases Reach 156 as 3.75 Lakh Homes Surveyed

Dengue cases in Bhopal have reached 156 this year, prompting the health department to intensify mosquito-control operations, fever surveillance and public-awareness work across the district. Officials said the situation remains under control, while teams continue to inspect vulnerable areas and remove mosquito-breeding sites.

According to a health department press release issued on Monday, teams have surveyed approximately 3.75 lakh households and 27 lakh containers as part of the prevention drive. The inspections are intended to identify stagnant water and other potential breeding sites linked to dengue transmission.

The department said regular fever surveys, larval inspections, larval eradication and insecticide spraying are being conducted across Bhopal. The measures cover dengue as well as malaria and chikungunya, which are also transmitted through mosquito breeding and can place additional pressure on public-health services during seasonal outbreaks.

Officials have identified 18 vulnerable areas in Bhopal district for special surveillance. The areas were selected based on dengue case patterns recorded over the past three years. Health teams are carrying out repeated inspections and preventive interventions in these locations, while also working to detect suspected cases at an early stage.

The scale of the household survey places prevention partly at the level of everyday urban services. The inspection of 27 lakh containers indicates that health teams are looking beyond confirmed patients to locate the neighbourhood-level conditions in which mosquitoes can breed. The department’s reported actions include eliminating larvae and spraying insecticide where required.

Five designated sentinel centres in the district remain operational for dengue testing through enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, or ELISA, facilities. These centres are the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhopal; Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre; Gandhi Medical College; JP Hospital; and Civil Hospital in Bairagarh.

The testing network provides residents and health workers with designated facilities for laboratory confirmation while field teams continue surveillance and preventive work. The health department has not reported any escalation beyond its assessment that the situation remains under control.

The current response combines case detection, laboratory testing and source control. Its immediate focus is on the 18 areas identified through earlier case patterns, alongside broader household and container inspections across the district. The department’s prevention drive and surveillance operations are continuing.
