Bengaluru’s Central Silk Board Junction is set to receive a coordinated upgrade covering traffic movement, drainage, sanitation and public space development under the Ward One campaign, Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda said on Saturday.
The campaign is being launched from November 1 across 43 wards in five city corporations. Byre Gowda inaugurated the initiative at the junction by painting one of the flyover pillars. He said a permanent plan would be prepared for the comprehensive development of Central Silk Board Junction, where thousands of residents and commuters travel every day.
The proposed work includes improving traffic flow and beautifying the junction, particularly the areas below the flyovers. Cleaning work will be carried out in these spaces, with seating and facilities for recreation planned for citizens. The minister instructed officials to develop vacant land beside the stormwater drain as an island-style public space with seating and shade.
Officials were also directed to install brush concrete in selected soil-covered areas to help maintain cleanliness. A public toilet is to be built at the junction for the convenience of daily commuters. On the route from Electronic City towards BTM Layout, a steel grid is proposed over a section of the stormwater drain to support smoother vehicle movement and facilitate a free-left turn.
The under-flyover area is also being developed with painted pillars, kerb stones and seating. A throwball court is being constructed, while officials have been asked to provide facilities for table tennis and other activities. These interventions are intended to make the space more usable rather than leave it solely as residual land beneath transport infrastructure.
Drainage is another part of the proposed work. To address problems that arise during rainfall on the stretch from Silk Board Junction towards HSR Layout, B-SMILE is undertaking white-topping work. Byre Gowda also directed officials to take steps to construct a new drain alongside the road improvement project.
The under-flyover development is being supported through a corporate social responsibility initiative by CGI, in partnership with the Bengaluru South City Corporation. The design and implementation of the Mysuru Silk-themed concept is being handled by India Rising Trust, a non-governmental organisation that has already developed more than five flyover-under areas, according to the minister.
The announcement places traffic operations, stormwater management and public-space improvements within the same junction-level intervention. However, the source report did not specify the project cost, construction schedule, completion deadline or the agencies responsible for each individual work. The next steps will involve preparing the permanent development plan and implementing the proposed road, drainage, sanitation and public-space facilities under the Ward One campaign.
