Charaka Super Speciality Hospital on Broadway Road in Bengaluru has started dialysis services and is expanding nephro-urology care for residents of the city’s northern areas, reducing the need for patients to travel to facilities in other parts of the city for kidney-related treatment.
The new unit has been established by the Nephro-Urology Institute under an agreement with the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College and Research Institute. Dialysis services are currently operational, while other nephro-urology services are expected to begin shortly as equipment installation and related preparations continue.
The unit has been given 40 beds within the four-storey hospital. Of these, 22 beds have been reserved for dialysis, 12 are general beds and two are intensive care unit beds. The hospital is currently conducting 26 dialysis procedures a day, according to the report.
Dr Shivlingaiah M., director of the Nephro-Urology Institute, said the unit had been established on the hospital’s first floor under the agreement with the medical college and research institute. The institute will provide the required doctors and medical staff, he said, while additional equipment and other processes are being put in place.
The expansion comes as the number of patients requiring nephro-urology services has increased. Diabetes, high blood pressure and changing lifestyles were cited as factors contributing to the rise in kidney-related conditions. The Nephro-Urology Institute’s facility on the Victoria Hospital campus has consequently been experiencing increased patient pressure.
Charaka Super Speciality Hospital was built by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike in 2020 at a cost of ₹24.38 crore, with support from the Infosys Foundation. The foundation provided ₹11 crore for equipment, beds and other facilities. Although construction was completed, the hospital did not begin regular operations for several years because doctors and staff had not been appointed.
The facility was used for treating Covid-19 patients during the first and second waves of the pandemic. Super-speciality services began there in September 2024. The hospital has a total capacity of 140 beds, with the nephro-urology unit now forming a dedicated part of that capacity.
The agreement with the Nephro-Urology Institute is intended to address the staffing and specialist-care gap that had affected the hospital’s operations. The remaining kidney-related medical services at the new unit are scheduled to be introduced after the ongoing installation and preparation work is completed.
