Bengaluru’s water utility is preparing to deploy artificial intelligence, predictive monitoring systems and robotic inspection tools across parts of the city’s distribution network in a new attempt to reduce water losses, detect illegal extraction and improve infrastructure efficiency. The move comes as India’s technology capital faces growing pressure on its water resources amid rapid urban expansion, rising demand and ageing utility assets.
The pilot initiative will focus on identifying what utilities classify as non-revenue water — treated water that is produced but never generates income because of leakages, theft, faulty metering or distribution inefficiencies.Urban planners argue that reducing such losses is often cheaper and more environmentally sustainable than expanding water extraction or building new supply infrastructure.According to officials familiar with the programme, advanced analytics will be used to assess pipeline vulnerabilities and predict areas where failures are likely to occur.Acoustic sensing technologies are expected to help locate underground leaks without extensive excavation, while robotic devices will be deployed inside pipelines to inspect structural defects, hidden seepage points and unauthorised connections.For Bengaluru, the significance extends beyond operational efficiency. Water scarcity has become a recurring urban challenge, particularly in peripheral neighbourhoods where infrastructure expansion has struggled to keep pace with real-estate growth.
Experts note that every litre lost through leakage increases pressure on already stressed freshwater sources and raises the energy costs associated with pumping and treatment.The city’s water authority has increasingly adopted digital technologies over the past year, including artificial intelligence-based monitoring systems at pumping stations and robotic tools for underground pipeline inspections. Officials say these measures are intended to strengthen asset management while reducing disruptions caused by conventional maintenance methods that often require extensive road excavation.The latest effort also reflects a broader shift in how Indian cities are approaching urban infrastructure management. Rather than relying solely on physical expansion projects, utilities are increasingly investing in data-driven systems that improve the performance of existing networks. Infrastructure analysts suggest that such approaches can deliver significant savings by improving billing accuracy, reducing wastage and extending the lifespan of public assets.However, technology alone is unlikely to solve Bengaluru’s water challenges.
