Bengaluru Transport Moves to Digital Passes

The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is poised to take a significant leap towards digital transformation by going fully digital in its issuance of commuter passes starting from 15 September. This strategic move is set to revolutionise the commuter experience by providing a seamless, cashless, paperless, and contactless method for obtaining daily, weekly, and monthly passes.

Presently, BMTC facilitates pass issuance through both pre-printed physical formats and digital means. However, in a bid to streamline operations and enhance user convenience, the corporation has decided to phase out physical passes altogether. Moving forward, passengers will need to acquire their travel passes exclusively through the Tummoc mobile application. This app-based system promises to deliver an efficient, user-friendly experience, allowing commuters to purchase their passes with a few simple taps on their smartphones. BMTC officials have underscored that this transition is designed to make the process more accessible and convenient for all. By eliminating the need for cash transactions and physical passes, the corporation aims to reduce administrative overheads and minimise the environmental impact associated with paper usage. The digital shift aligns with the broader push towards a cashless economy and smart city initiatives, fostering a more sustainable and tech-savvy urban ecosystem.

While daily passes will still be obtainable through electronic ticketing machines handled by conductors onboard buses, the Tummoc app will now serve as the primary platform for all pass transactions. This app-centric approach is anticipated to enhance operational efficiency and reduce the instances of fraud and revenue leakage often associated with cash-based systems. The move to a fully digital model also reflects BMTC’s commitment to embracing technological advancements in public transportation.
