Bengaluru civic authorities have fined five contractors a combined ₹40.79 lakh for failing to maintain street lights across the Central and South municipal jurisdictions, following night inspections of major roads and neighbourhoods.
Central municipal commissioner Jagadish and additional commissioner for development Venkatachalapathy inspected the functioning of street lights in several areas and on key roads last week. During the visits, officials directed municipal staff and contractor agencies to immediately repair lights that were not working.
The penalties were imposed after officials found continuing lapses in maintenance despite those instructions. The action was taken under the terms of the contracts issued to the agencies, according to a civic announcement cited in the report.
In the Central municipal jurisdiction, two contractors were fined a total of ₹27,79,307. Efilume Private Limited was penalised ₹21.35 lakh, while Esmart Energy Solutions was fined ₹6.44 lakh. The report does not specify the number of non-functioning lights identified during the inspection or the locations covered by each contract.
In the South municipal jurisdiction, three contractors were fined a combined ₹13 lakh for inadequate maintenance. Efilume Private Limited was fined ₹3.29 lakh, Spectrumtool Engineer Private Limited ₹9.56 lakh and Transglobal Power Limited ₹14,599. The penalties were ordered by municipal commissioner K.N. Ramesh.
The enforcement action highlights the operational dependence of Bengaluru’s street-light network on outsourced maintenance contracts. For residents, the immediate issue is not only whether lights are installed, but whether faults are reported, attended to and resolved within the timeframe required by the contract. A failed light on a major road or in a residential area can affect visibility for pedestrians, two-wheeler users and other road users after dark.
The municipal authorities have instructed engineers and contractors to repair all faulty LED street lights within their jurisdictions on an urgent basis. Commissioner Ramesh also warned that further strict action would be taken if officials or contractors were found negligent in carrying out their duties.
The latest penalties therefore combine a financial sanction with a direction for immediate repairs. The next public test for the civic agencies and contractors will be whether the identified faults are cleared and whether the maintenance system prevents repeated failures across the affected areas.
