The Karnataka Cabinet has approved an additional ₹1,118.50 crore to speed up completion of the 134-kilometre Bengaluru ring road project linking Anekal, Sarjapur, Varthur, the airport and Nelamangala, Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda said on 8 November.
The project is intended to reduce traffic congestion around Bengaluru and strengthen road links across the city’s outer areas. It is being implemented by the Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Limited (KRDCL) and was originally approved in 2017.
According to the minister, the additional funding became necessary because of increases in land acquisition costs, price escalation, delays and extra works added during implementation. The Cabinet has also expressed dissatisfaction over the delay and directed officials to complete the remaining work at the earliest.
The planned road network is expected to connect Hoskote and Nelamangala with the airport, while also improving links from Bidadi through Varthur to Sarjapur. The state government said the project would strengthen transport connectivity in Bengaluru’s peripheral areas and support development along the corridor.
A 1.92-kilometre elevated corridor is planned in Varthur, where traffic congestion is reported to be particularly high. The project also includes railway-crossing flyovers at Gollahalli, Basavanahalli, Rajanukunte, Narayanapura, Kadugodi and Varthur Junction.
The Cabinet’s decision increases the approved financial support for a project that has remained under implementation since 2017. The source report did not specify the project’s original approved cost, the revised completion date, the amount already spent or the status of individual construction packages. Officials have been instructed to accelerate the pending works.
