Bengaluru PM10 Pollution Raises Fresh Urban Health Concerns
Rising concentrations of particulate pollution are placing Bengaluru’s urban sustainability ambitions under renewed scrutiny, with the city’s annual PM10 pollution levels climbing beyond pre-pandemic benchmarks despite years of investment in air quality improvement measures. The trend raises concerns over the effectiveness of pollution-control strategies as India’s technology capital continues to expand through rapid urbanisation, increased vehicle ownership and intensive construction activity.
Data from continuous air quality monitoring stations indicates that the city’s annual average PM10 concentration during 2025-26 exceeded both the national ambient air quality standard and the levels recorded before the Covid-19 disruption. While pollution temporarily declined during periods of reduced mobility and economic activity, subsequent years have seen a steady upward trajectory, signalling that the earlier improvement was not driven by lasting structural reforms. Urban planners and environmental experts argue that Bengaluru’s growth has outpaced the expansion of sustainable transport systems and pollution mitigation infrastructure. A sharp rise in private vehicle registrations, coupled with persistent road dust, construction emissions and inadequate control of waste burning, has added pressure on the city’s air quality. Increased concretisation has also reduced the natural dispersion of pollutants, making neighbourhoods more vulnerable to prolonged exposure.
The deterioration comes despite substantial public investment through the National Clean Air Programme, under which hundreds of crores have been allocated for pollution reduction initiatives. Official records show that a significant portion of these funds has already been utilised, yet Bengaluru continues to remain a non-attainment city, reflecting its inability to consistently meet prescribed national air quality standards. Experts suggest that financial allocations alone cannot deliver cleaner air unless supported by stronger enforcement, integrated transport planning and sustained monitoring of pollution sources. For residents, worsening PM10 pollution carries implications beyond environmental quality. Coarse particulate matter can aggravate respiratory illnesses, reduce outdoor comfort and affect the productivity of a city that depends heavily on knowledge industries and a healthy workforce. Public health specialists increasingly view air pollution as an urban planning challenge rather than solely an environmental issue, requiring coordinated action across transport, land use, housing and municipal governance.
The city’s experience also illustrates the growing tension between economic expansion and environmental resilience.
