Bengaluru Pink Line Clears Key Safety Check, Opening Nears

Bengaluru’s 7.5-km elevated Pink Line has completed its statutory safety inspection, bringing the corridor closer to opening for public service and expanding Namma Metro’s operational network to 103.6 km.

The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS), Southern Circle, completed the three-day inspection on Thursday, according to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL). The inspection covered the elevated section between Kalena Agrahara and Tavarekere, along with the corridor’s associated operational facilities.

CMRS V Venkatasubramanian and his team began the assessment on Tuesday with a motor trolley inspection of the main line and related infrastructure. On the following day, the team inspected the Kothanur depot, conducted train trials and carried out further testing and motor trolley checks. The operations control centre at Byappanahalli was inspected on Thursday.

The inspection is a statutory safety assessment required before a metro section can be authorised for public operation. BMRCL said the CMRS will issue the authorisation subject to compliance with observations and conditions recorded during the inspection. The inspection’s completion therefore marks an important regulatory step, but does not itself constitute the final permission to begin passenger services.

The corridor had already crossed several other technical and regulatory milestones. BMRCL obtained a speed certificate from the Research Designs and Standards Organisation in August 2026. The Railway Board subsequently granted provisional sanction for the rolling stock, while an independent safety assessor certified the signalling system, according to the information reported by The Times of India.

Once opened, the Pink Line’s elevated section will increase Bengaluru Metro’s operational network from 96.1 km to 103.6 km. The additional 7.5 km will serve the Bannerghatta Road corridor and adjoining areas, where the new stations are expected to provide a rail-based public transport option.

The elevated section has six stations: Kalena Agrahara, Hulimavu, IIMB, JP Nagar 4th Phase, Jayadeva Hospital and Tavarekere. These stations will connect residential areas, institutional destinations and major activity points along the corridor, although the supplied information does not specify the passenger opening date or the final conditions that CMRS may impose.

The Pink Line’s opening will also change the scale of Bengaluru’s currently operating metro system. The network expansion remains dependent on the completion of the statutory authorisation process and BMRCL’s compliance with the observations and conditions arising from the safety inspection. The next formal milestone is the CMRS decision on authorisation for public service.
