Bengaluru–Mangaluru Vande Bharat Extension Brings Coastal Karnataka Closer

The existing Vande Bharat Express operating between Mangaluru Central and Madgaon in Goa will be extended to Bengaluru following an order from the Union Railway Ministry, a move that responds to a long-standing demand for faster rail connectivity between Karnataka’s capital and the coastal region.

The extension is expected to create a direct Vande Bharat link between Bengaluru and Mangaluru, although the report by Prajavani does not provide the revised timetable, launch date, number of stops or the exact operating pattern after the extension. The service currently runs from Mangaluru Central to Madgaon and is being extended rather than replaced by a newly introduced train.

The decision is significant for passengers in Mangaluru and the wider coastal belt, where Bengaluru is a major destination for work, education, healthcare, commerce and government-related travel. A direct premium intercity service could reduce the need for passengers to change trains or depend on road transport, but the actual benefit will depend on the final schedule, journey time and intermediate halts.

The route’s proposed operation through Mangaluru Central is also a key issue for local rail users. During a trial run, the Vande Bharat train had reportedly omitted Mangaluru Central. Passenger groups in Mangaluru have therefore pressed for the extended service to continue using the city’s central railway station, from where the existing service operates.

Mangaluru Central is the main urban rail terminal serving the city, and retaining it on the extended route would determine how accessible the service is for passengers from the city and surrounding coastal districts. Excluding the station would weaken the practical value of a Bengaluru connection for many local users, even if the train continued to serve the broader region.

Prajavani’s discussion on the extension focuses on the likely benefits for coastal passengers and the demand that Mangaluru Central remain part of the operating route. Further details on the service’s timetable, stops and commencement will be required before its passenger impact can be assessed fully.
