The proposed Bengaluru–Mangaluru Vande Bharat service has moved closer to passenger operations after a specially equipped train underwent safety testing on the difficult Sakleshpur–Subrahmanya Road section of the Western Ghats. The trials are significant because this steep, tunnel-heavy stretch has been the main technical challenge for introducing a semi-high-speed service on the coastal Karnataka corridor.
South Western Railway’s Mysuru Division began field trials in August using a 20-coach Vande Bharat rake fitted with an Automatic Emergency Braking system. The Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), along with railway personnel from multiple technical departments, has been assessing braking, stability, speed control and other operating parameters on the ghat section. The Bengaluru Mangaluru Vande Bharat proposal has required additional testing because of the geography of the route. The Sakleshpur–Subrahmanya Road stretch has steep gradients, numerous curves, tunnels and bridges, requiring trains to operate under tighter speed and safety conditions.Conventional services use additional banker locomotives on difficult portions of the route, making a standard Vande Bharat configuration less straightforward. The new trainset’s automatic braking technology is intended to provide an additional layer of control while negotiating the demanding terrain. The trials therefore represent more than a routine timetable exercise; they are effectively a test of whether the train’s technology and operating procedures can be safely integrated into one of Karnataka’s most challenging railway environments. For the Bengaluru Mangaluru Vande Bharat, the potential urban and economic impact extends beyond faster intercity travel.
Bengaluru and coastal Karnataka have strong links through employment, education, tourism, trade and services. A dependable daytime rail connection could widen access to these opportunities while providing an alternative to road-based travel on a busy intercity corridor. However, speed should not become the sole measure of the project’s value. Rail infrastructure in the Western Ghats is environmentally sensitive, and service planning will need to account for monsoon conditions, track resilience and the maintenance requirements of a difficult terrain. Recent restoration work and speed restrictions on portions of the ghat section underline the importance of infrastructure reliability alongside faster services. The final route, timetable, frequency and commercial launch date have not been officially established in the sources reviewed. Safety clearance and operational approvals remain necessary before passengers can board the service. Reports have also discussed possible extensions towards Madgaon, but these arrangements should not be treated as confirmed until formally announced by the Railways.
For Karnataka’s wider mobility network, the project now enters a more consequential stage. If approvals follow successful testing, the service could strengthen rail-based connectivity between the state’s major inland and coastal economies. The larger test will be whether improved speed is matched by affordability, dependable schedules and resilient infrastructure capable of operating safely through the Western Ghats.
