The Karnataka government has announced a 10-day Bengaluru Jatre from December 4 to 13, with the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) designated as the main coordinating agency for the citywide cultural festival. The announcement was made by Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda after a meeting at the GBA central office on October 3.
The festival is intended to provide Bengaluru residents with opportunities to engage with art, culture, literature, music, sport and the city’s heritage alongside the government’s ongoing work on roads, water supply, traffic and other basic services, the minister said.
Byre Gowda said urban life could not be defined only by infrastructure and civic services. According to the statement reported by Vijay Karnataka, he said improving residents’ quality of life also required access to cultural and recreational experiences. The event is being planned as a public festival rather than only an official government programme.
The announcement follows the state government’s organisation of a “Freedom Festival” on August 15. The minister said that programme had received significant public appreciation and that the Bengaluru Jatre was being planned in a similar spirit over 10 days. Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar had earlier assured that a Bengaluru festival would be organised in December, he said.
The GBA will work with the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited, Karnataka State Police, the Bengaluru Traffic Police and security authorities, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board, the Bangalore Development Authority, Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited, the Fire and Emergency Services Department, and the Kannada and Culture Department. The agencies are expected to jointly support the organisation of the festival.
The minister said arrangements would be made to prevent traffic problems during the 10-day event. However, the announcement did not specify the festival venues, the detailed programme, expected attendance, traffic diversions, public transport arrangements, budget or the number of events planned across the city.
The organisers are also seeking participation from Bengaluru’s information technology and business companies, private educational institutions, art galleries, public-sector enterprises and hotel associations. Letters are being sent to these organisations asking them to create a festive atmosphere at their own premises and organise cultural programmes according to their capacity.
The proposed arrangement places the GBA at the centre of an event that will require coordination across transport, policing, utilities, fire safety, public infrastructure and cultural administration. Further details on venues, schedules and mobility arrangements are expected as the programme is finalised for the december opening.
