Bengaluru Heatwave Forecast Signals A Tougher Summer
Bengaluru could face a hotter and more demanding summer, with the India Meteorological Department’s seasonal outlook pointing to above-normal temperatures across Karnataka between March and May. The Bengaluru heatwave forecast matters beyond weather records: sustained heat can raise household cooling costs, increase pressure on electricity networks and expose outdoor workers and vulnerable residents to greater health risks.
The forecast, issued in February, indicated that Karnataka had a high likelihood of experiencing above-normal maximum temperatures during the pre-monsoon period. Coastal Karnataka was assessed as having a 65–75% probability of above-normal daytime temperatures, while parts of south-interior Karnataka, including Bengaluru Urban, were also expected to remain warmer than their long-term averages. For Bengaluru, the concern is particularly significant because the city’s traditional reputation for moderate weather does not fully reflect its recent temperature extremes. IMD climatological data cited in the forecast put typical maximum temperatures at around 33°C in May and roughly 34°C in April. The city has nevertheless recorded substantially higher temperatures during recent hot spells, including peaks approaching 40°C. The Bengaluru heatwave forecast also highlights a wider urban planning challenge.
Dense construction, extensive paved surfaces and declining or fragmented green spaces can reduce natural cooling and intensify local heat accumulation. These effects are unevenly distributed, with neighbourhoods that have limited tree cover and fewer shaded public spaces often offering less protection from prolonged daytime exposure. The economic implications extend into buildings and infrastructure. Hotter conditions can increase demand for air-conditioning and other cooling equipment, adding to electricity consumption and household expenditure. For businesses, sustained heat can affect worker productivity, particularly in construction, logistics, street commerce and other occupations requiring prolonged outdoor activity. Heat also creates a public-space challenge. Safe drinking-water access, shaded walking routes, functioning public parks and appropriately timed outdoor work can become essential urban infrastructure during severe heat. Hospitals and emergency services may likewise need additional preparedness when temperatures remain elevated for several days.
IMD’s heatwave guidance framework includes impact-based warnings and district-level alerts, giving city authorities a basis for preparing responses rather than reacting only after temperatures peak. For Bengaluru, the longer-term response will depend on how heat risk is incorporated into everyday urban development. Protecting tree cover, expanding shaded public spaces, improving building design and ensuring equitable access to cooling can reduce exposure while supporting a more climate-resilient city.
