The proposed 11.6-kilometre elevated corridor is being positioned as a traffic relief measure, but its emergence comes amid increasing scrutiny of flyover-led mobility strategies across the city.

The proposal arrives at a time when Bengaluru is already pursuing one of the country’s largest urban road expansion programmes.Earlier this year, the Karnataka government approved 11 elevated corridors and flyovers spanning more than 75 kilometres at an estimated cost exceeding ₹13,000 crore, aimed at improving connectivity across key growth zones of the metropolitan region.However, urban mobility experts argue that the city’s recurring congestion challenges stem from deeper structural issues than road capacity alone.Bengaluru has witnessed decades of employment growth, suburban expansion and increasing dependence on private vehicles.While new flyovers can reduce delays at specific junctions, planners note that traffic frequently reappears at downstream bottlenecks where road networks remain constrained.The latest proposal reflects a broader pattern in which successive infrastructure projects are introduced to address pressure points created by previous interventions. This phenomenon has fuelled discussions around the effectiveness of relying primarily on road-based solutions for long-term mobility management.Transport researchers point to international evidence showing that expanding road space often generates additional vehicle trips over time, reducing the lasting impact of decongestion projects. They argue that sustainable mobility outcomes are more likely when road investments are coordinated with high-capacity public transport, pedestrian infrastructure and transit-oriented urban planning.The timing is particularly significant as Bengaluru continues to invest heavily in metro rail expansion, suburban rail connectivity and multimodal transport systems. Urban economists note that infrastructure spending must increasingly balance immediate congestion relief with broader goals such as lower emissions, reduced fuel consumption and improved access to employment opportunities.Environmental considerations are also becoming harder to ignore. Elevated corridors can require significant construction resources and land interventions, while encouraging greater vehicle usage may increase transport-related carbon emissions unless accompanied by strong public transport alternatives. As authorities evaluate the new corridor, the key question extends beyond whether it can move vehicles faster. The larger challenge is whether Bengaluru can develop an integrated mobility network that prioritises accessibility, economic productivity and environmental resilience simultaneously. The success of future infrastructure investments may ultimately depend on how effectively these objectives are aligned rather than on the number of flyovers added to the city’s skyline.
