In response to the escalating security situation following heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru has issued a crucial advisory urging passengers to arrive at least three hours before their scheduled flight departures.
This precautionary step, taken in conjunction with enhanced security protocols, aims to ensure smoother operations at one of India’s busiest aviation hubs. With the increased threat level across the nation, which has prompted airspace restrictions and the closure of several airports, airport authorities are working diligently to manage passenger flow while maintaining high safety standards. An official spokesperson from BIAL highlighted that the airport is focused on ensuring minimal disruption to passengers despite the added security checks. “Given the national security alert, we have intensified our security protocols. Over the last 48 hours, Bengaluru’s airport has witnessed a significant number of flight cancellations and delays, disrupting travel plans for thousands. The closure of more than 20 airports nationwide has led to the cancellation of 49 flights from Kempegowda International Airport, adding to the already challenging travel situation.
The cancellations have primarily affected flights to and from Jammu, Leh, Srinagar, Amritsar, Jodhpur, and other northern destinations. On Wednesday alone, 29 flights were cancelled, with 15 arrivals and 14 departures impacted. The following day saw 20 more cancellations, including both domestic and international services, disrupting the travel schedules of many passengers. Airlines, including Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet, have been at the forefront of these cancellations, with Air India halting services to several northern destinations, including Jammu and Srinagar. IndiGo also reported the suspension of 165 flights, citing airspace restrictions and temporary airport closures in northern India. Experts noted that these cancellations were largely in response to the government’s advisories and the closure of airspace over sensitive regions.
SpiceJet, too, has been forced to cancel services to and from destinations such as Jammu, Srinagar, Leh, and Amritsar. The airline, along with other carriers, has been issuing travel advisories, urging passengers to check flight statuses and consider rebooking or requesting refunds. A number of international flights, including those to Amritsar, were diverted to other airports due to ongoing operational disruptions. In light of the ongoing cancellations, passengers have been encouraged to check their flight status through official airline websites or contact their customer service departments for the latest updates. In addition to this, the airlines are providing full refunds or alternative rebooking options to affected passengers, ensuring that their journey plans are restructured as smoothly as possible.
The airport has also mobilised ground staff to assist passengers during this chaotic period.
