To redefine southern India’s air cargo ecosystem, a state-of-the-art logistics park has commenced operations within the precincts of Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru.
Developed at a cost of Rs 2 billion, the sprawling 8-acre facility is being touted as one of the largest on-airport logistics parks in the region, marking a significant step toward integrating faster, greener and smarter cargo operations in India’s aviation and trade networks. Operated by a key joint venture between a leading Indian airline group and Singapore-based logistics major, the new facility is expected to not only enhance operational efficiency at the airport but also contribute meaningfully to Karnataka’s ambition of emerging as a central logistics hub in the country. Under a 15-year concession agreement with the airport operator, the venture will manage, maintain, and optimise cargo movement by offering end-to-end services—including dedicated trucking corridors—for seamless cargo transit between terminals.
The timing of the launch is critical, with Kempegowda International Airport already handling close to 40 per cent of South India’s total air freight. The airport recorded an all-time high of 502,480 metric tonnes of cargo in the financial year 2024-25. With this infrastructure in place, the airport is now poised to double its cargo capacity to a projected one million metric tonnes by 2030, a move that could dramatically recalibrate India’s logistics narrative on the global stage. Beyond capacity, the facility is designed to anchor sustainable supply chain development. Incorporating energy-efficient building design and automated handling systems, the park aligns with long-term goals of carbon neutrality, while also supporting gender-inclusive employment and equitable economic growth. The operational efficiency is expected to increase not only speed and safety in cargo handling, but also promote modal shifts towards less polluting forms of freight, helping reduce the carbon footprint of goods movement in one of the country’s fastest growing urban centres.
The broader implication of this logistics investment resonates beyond commercial gain. By strengthening infrastructure within the airport boundary, the facility serves as a model for other metropolitan airports seeking to decentralise warehousing and optimise land use. It also reflects a shift towards building cities and regional economies that are resilient, inclusive and capable of sustaining complex global supply chains while adhering to environmental and ethical benchmarks. The project is also emblematic of Bengaluru’s aspirations to evolve into a multi-modal logistics hub, complementing road, rail and upcoming suburban transit networks.
In a city already grappling with traffic congestion and spatial constraints, this airport-linked model may offer a viable solution for decongesting urban freight corridors and boosting export potential for local industries. As the global supply chain ecosystem increasingly demands resilience, sustainability, and speed, this initiative marks a turning point not only for Bengaluru’s logistics landscape but also for the broader narrative of green urban transformation in India.
