Bengal’s dengue cases crossed 5,000 by September 11, with Murshidabad recording the highest district total at 1,072 infections, according to a state health department bulletin reported on Sunday. The state recorded 5,002 positive cases after 6,826 dengue tests, with the overall count more than doubling in about a month.
The bulletin’s figures, collected up to September 11 from August 6, show that Bengal had recorded 2,410 dengue cases as of August 6. The total rose to 5,002 by September 11, indicating an increase of 2,592 cases over the period.
Murshidabad accounted for the largest share of the reported infections, with 1,072 cases. Kolkata recorded more than 500 cases, while North 24 Parganas reported 450. Nadia recorded more than 400 cases, and Malda reported around 400 infections.
South 24 Parganas recorded 366 cases, while Howrah and Hooghly each reported 325. The district-wise figures also included 256 cases in Purba Bardhaman, 154 in Paschim Bardhaman, 126 in Purba Medinipur, 104 in Paschim Medinipur and 54 in Jhargram.
The figures cover a broad spread of districts, including Kolkata and several neighbouring districts in the wider metropolitan region, as well as districts across central, northern and western Bengal. The bulletin did not provide a separate breakdown of hospitalisations, deaths, severe cases or the number of active infections in the material reported.
The testing data shows that 6,826 dengue tests had been conducted by September 11, against 5,002 positive results recorded in the bulletin. The figures represent reported test-confirmed cases and do not establish the total number of people with fever or other suspected dengue symptoms.
Dengue is transmitted by infected mosquitoes, making district-level surveillance, testing and local vector-control operations important parts of the public-health response. However, the reported bulletin figures do not specify the measures being undertaken in individual districts, the frequency of field inspections, or the deployment of municipal and district teams.
The concentration of cases in Murshidabad, Kolkata, North 24 Parganas, Nadia and Malda makes the district-wise distribution a central feature of the latest update. The data also records cases in every district listed in the bulletin, including smaller totals in Jhargram and both Medinipur districts.
The state health department’s next updates will indicate whether the increase continues beyond the September 11 reporting cut-off and whether additional details on testing, treatment and district-level control measures are released.
