BEML Ltd. has unveiled its 2100th metro coach at its Bengaluru facility, marking a milestone in indigenous rail manufacturing.
This latest coach is equipped with state-of-the-art driverless technology, aligning with global standards for automated urban transit systems. The newly launched coach, designed for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) through the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), features Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4) capabilities, enabling Unattended Train Operation (UTO). It incorporates advanced safety systems and smart features, including an Onboard Condition Monitoring System—a first for Indian metro trains—that allows real-time predictive maintenance and remote diagnostics, enhancing operational efficiency and passenger safety.
Complementing this technological achievement, BEML has announced the establishment of a new rolling stock manufacturing unit in Umeria, Raisen District, Madhya Pradesh. The Madhya Pradesh government has allocated 60.063 hectares (approximately 148 acres) for this facility, which will focus on producing metro coaches and rolling stock for upcoming railway and urban mobility projects across India. This strategic expansion is expected to bolster regional industrial growth and generate significant employment opportunities, aligning with the nation’s broader goals of self-reliance and sustainable development. The dual milestones underscore BEML’s commitment to advancing India’s urban mobility infrastructure through innovation and strategic investment. The integration of cutting-edge technology in metro coaches and the expansion of manufacturing capabilities reflect a concerted effort to meet the growing demands of urban transportation while fostering economic development in emerging industrial regions.
As India continues to urbanize rapidly, initiatives like BEML’s not only enhance the efficiency and safety of public transportation but also contribute to the nation’s vision of becoming a global leader in sustainable and inclusive urban development.
