The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has announced a new initiative to address the growing concern over poorly maintained vacant plots across Bengaluru. Under this scheme, notices will be issued to owners of neglected sites, with fines imposed for failure to rectify maintenance issues.
According to the BBMP Chief Commissioner, the initiative aims to ensure that all vacant properties within the BBMP jurisdiction are maintained to a standard of cleanliness. Each zone will be tasked with compiling a list of such properties, and notices will be sent to those found lacking in upkeep. If property owners do not address these issues after receiving the notices, they will face monetary penalties.
Previously, the BBMP had set forth a policy where site owners are held accountable for keeping their plots free of garbage, with fines of ₹2 per square foot for non-compliance. Repeated violations could result in legal action, with fines added to the property tax. A BBMP official stressed that this measure is crucial not only for aesthetic reasons but also for public health. Neglected vacant plots often become breeding grounds for pests and health hazards, and can attract illegal dumping. By enforcing this new policy, the BBMP aims to mitigate these risks and enhance the overall quality of life in Bengaluru’s neighbourhoods.
The initiative has received a mixed reception from the public. While some residents are supportive, hoping it will encourage property owners to clear their premises—particularly in outlying areas where vacant plots have become problematic—others are concerned that property owners should not be penalised for issues caused by others. In related news, the city’s dengue situation remains stable. The BBMP Commissioner reported a reduction in daily dengue cases from approximately 200 to 165-170, indicating a stabilisation. Despite this, vigilance remains crucial, and testing has been intensified in various zones. Efforts to control mosquito breeding include deploying 600 fogging machines and 618 sprayers.
