Delhi will inaugurate the long-awaited Barapullah Phase 3 elevated corridor on September 29, alongside the launch or foundation-laying of three other road infrastructure projects intended to improve connectivity and reduce congestion across south and north Delhi.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to inaugurate the Barapullah Phase 3 corridor on Tuesday, according to information reported by Navbharat Times. Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Verma said the programme will also include the start of another road facility and the foundation stones for two projects.
The two new projects are the extension of the Modi Mill flyover towards Kalkaji and a parallel flyover at the Savitri Cinema junction. The Mukarba Chowk underpass project, which has been completed, will also be inaugurated during the programme.
The Modi Mill flyover extension and the Savitri Cinema junction project have received a combined approval of Rs 371 crore. Of this amount, Rs 150 crore has been allocated for the current financial year. The Delhi government has set a completion target of 24 to 30 months for the two projects.
The Modi Mill-Kalkaji extension will be a 1.5-kilometre, six-lane structure. According to an official cited in the report, it will have nine-metre-wide carriageways on both sides, along with a median, crash barriers and railings. The alignment will cover key junctions and roads including Captain Gaur Marg, Maa Anandmayi Marg, Lotus Temple Road, Masjid Moth Road and the Nehru Place bus depot.
The project is expected to provide an elevated connection towards Kalkaji while linking several busy sections of south Delhi. The locations covered by the planned structure include areas that serve residential neighbourhoods, commercial destinations and major local roads around Nehru Place and Greater Kailash.
At the Savitri Cinema junction, the proposed grade separator is intended to address congestion affecting Greater Kailash-I, Greater Kailash-II and Chittaranjan Park. The facility will be a 900-metre, one-way, three-lane structure. It will include a 435-metre elevated road, two entry and exit ramps, dedicated bus bays and redesigned junctions.
The project design also includes rebuilt footpaths, cycle tracks, improved drainage to address waterlogging and upgraded street lighting. These elements indicate that the planned intervention is not limited to moving vehicle traffic and will also alter pedestrian movement, cycling conditions and the management of stormwater around the junction.
The Mukarba Chowk project has already been completed near Gate 3 of Haiderpur-Badli Mor Metro station. It includes three underpasses: two for motor vehicles and a third for pedestrians and non-motorised vehicles. The two vehicular underpasses are each approximately 50 metres long, 9.6 metres wide and six metres high.
According to a government official cited in the report, the vehicular underpasses will improve connectivity between Badli and Rohini. The September 29 programme will therefore combine the opening of a completed local traffic facility with the launch of a major corridor and the approval of further elevated road infrastructure.
