Barapullah flyover traffic remained severely congested on the Mayur Vihar-to-AIIMS carriageway in southeast Delhi on Friday, with traffic police using drones to monitor and manage the continuing jam. Police have urged Google to correct map information that is directing drivers towards the affected flyover stretch.
According to the Delhi traffic police, commuters travelling from Mayur Vihar towards AIIMS are being shown a roughly 3.5-kilometre stretch of the Barapullah Phase-3 flyover as clear on Google Search and Maps. The route is also being suggested as a shortcut, encouraging more vehicles to enter the flyover despite the ongoing congestion.
The traffic police have reportedly sent several reminders to Google regarding the inaccurate route information. Officials said the map update could take some more time. Until the information is corrected, drivers relying on the platform may continue to be directed towards the congested carriageway.
The problem is being intensified by traffic arriving through the loop and slip roads near Sarai Kale Khan. Five traffic streams using these connections to travel towards AIIMS are converging on the same route, adding to the pressure on the Mayur Vihar-to-AIIMS lane.
The traffic police are monitoring the situation through drones and using them for traffic management. The aerial surveillance is intended to help authorities assess congestion on the flyover and coordinate movement while the jam continues.
The Google route information for traffic travelling from Sarai Kale Khan towards AIIMS has reportedly been updated. In that direction, Google is showing congestion and suggesting alternative routes when necessary. However, commuters approaching from Mayur Vihar are still being directed towards the Barapullah flyover, where they are becoming trapped in the traffic queue.
The incident highlights the operational dependence of urban traffic movement on digital navigation platforms. A route displayed as open can redirect large volumes of vehicles onto a single corridor, while delays in updating road conditions can make traffic management more difficult for authorities and commuters alike. In this case, police intervention through drone monitoring is continuing while the requested Google Maps correction remains pending.
The immediate next step is the map update sought by Delhi traffic police. Until that correction is made, commuters travelling from Mayur Vihar towards AIIMS are being advised through the platform’s available routing information to use alternatives when congestion is detected.
