Assam Haibargaon Station Gets Modern Makeover

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has completed the much-awaited redevelopment of the 137-year-old Haibargaon railway station in Assam under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), transforming the historic site into a modern, accessible, and community-centric hub.

Established in 1887, the Haibargaon station in Nagaon district has long served as a key node in the region’s transportation network. The redevelopment under ABSS is aimed at improving passenger experience while promoting sustainability and local economy. The upgraded station now features a completely restructured circulating area, including marked parking zones, dedicated pick-up and drop lanes, and widened pedestrian paths. A new entrance has been built to enhance both access and aesthetics, accompanied by a modern concourse and renovated ticket booking counters. In a statement, an NFR spokesperson emphasised the inclusive nature of the project. “Special attention has been given to Divyangjan with the addition of ramps, tactile tiles, accessible toilets, and exclusive PRS counters. Modular toilets, a baby feeding room, and a kids’ play area are now in place to meet the varied needs of travellers.” The station also boasts better lighting with multiple themed installations and a revamped passenger information system to improve safety and communication. The redevelopment integrates commercial spaces, a tourist facilitation centre, and a landscaped children’s park with a pond, making the station more than just a transit point.

As part of the Indian Railways’ ‘One Station One Product’ initiative, kiosks featuring local goods have been introduced to support regional artisans and microenterprises. Sustainable design features such as eco-friendly landscaping align with the broader goals of the Amrit Bharat Scheme to modernise stations without compromising on environmental responsibility. The facelift not only aims to serve daily commuters better but also positions Haibargaon as a model for station redevelopment in the Northeast. The initiative is expected to uplift the local economy by encouraging footfall, tourism, and small-scale trade. The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, launched to transform over 1,300 stations across India, continues to prioritise regional identity, heritage preservation, and future-ready infrastructure. Haibargaon’s transformation is one of several projects underway across Assam and the Northeast.

With these upgrades, the historic station now stands as a blend of tradition and innovation, offering a more seamless, inclusive, and community-oriented travel experience.
