Andhra Pradesh Municipal Elections Deliver TD Urban Sweep

The Telugu Desam has won nine of Andhra Pradesh’s 13 mayoral posts and 68 of the 87 chairperson posts in municipalities and nagar panchayats, according to final results released by the State Election Commission on Wednesday. Counting in Ongole Municipal Corporation is still pending, while the election in Chirala municipality has been postponed to November 6.

The results cover 100 urban local bodies across the state, comprising 13 municipal corporations and 87 municipalities and nagar panchayats. The outcome determines the political leadership of most of these urban bodies, which are responsible for core municipal functions including local administration and civic service delivery.

The Telugu Desam secured nine mayoral posts. Jana Sena won two and the YSRC one. The result for the remaining mayoral post is linked to the pending counting process in Ongole Municipal Corporation in Prakasam district.

Among the 87 chairperson posts, the Telugu Desam won 68. Jana Sena secured 20, while the BJP and YSRC won four each. Independents won two chairperson posts. A total of 17 chairpersons were elected unanimously, according to the State Election Commission results.

The elections were held in 3,186 of the 3,942 wards across the 100 urban local bodies. Candidates were elected unanimously in 755 wards, while one ward remained uncontested. The ward-level results show the Telugu Desam winning 2,535 wards, followed by the YSRC with 539 and Jana Sena with 476.

The BJP won 152 wards, while independents secured 121. The CPI won seven wards, the Congress five, other parties five and the BSP one. The ward results provide the broader electoral distribution across the municipal corporations, municipalities and nagar panchayats, beyond the mayoral and chairperson posts.

The State Election Commission has not yet completed the counting process for Ongole Municipal Corporation. In Bapatla district, the election to Chirala municipality has been postponed and is scheduled for November 6. Until those processes are completed, the results for all 100 urban local bodies are not fully final.

The results now leave the Telugu Desam with the largest share of elected municipal leadership among the urban local bodies covered by the announcement. The next formal milestones are the completion of counting in Ongole and the conduct of the postponed Chirala municipality election.
