Ambuja Cements, part of the Adani Group, has announced a ₹14,500 crore expansion programme to add about 30 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of cement capacity by FY30, taking its total capacity to 155 MTPA and expanding its presence across eastern, western and northern India.
The programme will combine greenfield and brownfield projects, including 15.5 MTPA of grinding capacity in the West, 11.6 MTPA in the East and 2.9 MTPA in the North. The planned investments will add manufacturing capacity closer to major consumption centres, according to Vinod Bahety, CEO, Cement Business, Adani Group.
In the eastern region, Ambuja plans grinding units at Rangia and Hojai in Assam, Godda in Jharkhand and Muzaffarpur in Bihar. Each of these projects is planned with a capacity of 2.9 MTPA. The western expansion includes units at Mundra and Hazira in Gujarat, Raigad, Kalyan and Amravati in Maharashtra, each with a planned capacity of 2.9 MTPA, along with a 0.7-MTPA unit at Dahanu.
The northern expansion will include a 2.9-MTPA grinding unit at Dadri in Uttar Pradesh. The company also plans to add 4 MTPA of clinker capacity each at Umrangso in Assam and Maratha in Maharashtra, as well as 2.3 MTPA at Mundra. Clinker is an intermediate product used to manufacture cement, while grinding units process clinker into finished cement.
Bahety said the expansion would improve the balance between clinker and grinding capacity, bring manufacturing closer to consumption centres and reduce logistics costs. Ambuja is targeting a reduction in cement manufacturing costs to ₹4,000 per tonne by FY28 through operating efficiencies and shorter transportation distances.
The new programme follows capacity additions already completed by the company. Ambuja added 4.6 MTPA during the first half of FY27 through expansions at Dahej and Kalamboli and the commissioning of the Salai Banwa grinding unit in Uttar Pradesh. Those additions took its capacity to 113.5 MTPA.
A further 3.2 MTPA is expected to be stabilised and ramped up during the second half of FY27. The 2.4-MTPA Warisaliganj grinding unit in Bihar is also scheduled for commissioning during the period. With these additions, Ambuja expects its total capacity to reach 119 MTPA by next March.
Since its acquisition by the Adani Group, Ambuja has completed 11 capacity projects, adding 16.3 MTPA of cement capacity and 9 MTPA of clinker capacity. The latest expansion will take the company from its current expansion phase into a broader national capacity-building programme, with projects distributed across states rather than concentrated in one market.
The company’s stated next milestones are the stabilisation and ramp-up of 3.2 MTPA of capacity, the commissioning of the Warisaliganj unit and the expected increase in total capacity to 119 MTPA by next March.
