Amazon India is set to embark on an ambitious expansion of its delivery infrastructure, aiming to reach over 13,000 pin codes across the country by the end of 2026.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance e-commerce accessibility in underserved rural areas, reduce delivery times, and create more than 100,000 new employment opportunities.​ The expansion will see Amazon tripling its existing delivery network, including the establishment of over 200 rural delivery stations. This move is designed to streamline last-mile logistics, ensuring faster and more efficient deliveries to small towns and remote villages. By reducing reliance on third-party carriers, Amazon aims to have greater control over its logistics chain, thereby improving cost efficiency and service reliability.​
In addition to enhancing delivery capabilities, the expansion is expected to generate a significant number of job opportunities. These roles will range from full-time and part-time positions to flexible gig-based driving jobs, catering to the diverse employment needs of individuals in rural regions.​ This development aligns with Amazon’s broader sustainability goals. The company has already deployed over 6,000 electric vehicles (EVs) in its India delivery fleet, with plans to reach 10,000 EVs by 2025. These efforts contribute to Amazon’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, supporting the creation of eco-friendly and sustainable urban environments.​
To further bolster its rural logistics network, Amazon has partnered with India Post. This collaboration leverages India Post’s extensive last-mile delivery infrastructure, enabling Amazon to serve customers in approximately 19,300 pin codes, including remote areas such as Nubra Valley in Ladakh and the South Garo Hills in Meghalaya. The partnership has already resulted in a nearly threefold increase in the volume of Amazon parcels delivered through India Post in the past 18 months. ​ The expansion also includes the integration of Indian Railways’ Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs) to facilitate faster movement of customer packages. By utilizing these corridors, Amazon aims to improve the efficiency and reliability of its inter-city transportation, thereby enhancing the overall customer experience. ​
As Amazon continues to invest in its delivery infrastructure, the company is also focusing on digitizing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across India. Through initiatives like the “Amazon सह-AI” personal digital assistant, Amazon aims to simplify the e-commerce journey for SMEs, enabling them to reach a broader customer base and contribute to the digital economy.
