All-Women Team Takes Charge of Mumbai’s Railway Power Supply
The Mumbai Suburban Traction Distribution (TRD) department of Western Railway has assembled an exclusive women-led maintenance team, tasked with ensuring uninterrupted power supply for the city’s suburban train network. This initiative is not only a breakthrough in operational excellence but also a bold statement in breaking the traditional gender barriers in the technical and operational sectors.
The women maintenance team is responsible for overseeing the power supply infrastructure that sustains the AC traction system. Their key role involves maintaining critical equipment operating at high voltages, including 25kV and 110kV systems, with a special focus on the Mahalaxmi Traction Sub Station. This substation is a key player in the Western Railway network, supporting seamless operations across Mumbai’s sprawling rail network, which serves millions daily. Having undergone intensive training over the past month, the team has gained hands-on experience in managing and servicing high-voltage equipment, adhering to stringent safety protocols. The team began working independently this week, signalling a major milestone in both operational capabilities and inclusivity. Their deployment is a testament to the dedication of the Mumbai Division of Western Railway to foster diversity and champion gender equality in the workplace.
An official statement from the department highlighted that this initiative is a part of a broader effort to inspire future generations of women to pursue careers in traditionally male-dominated fields, such as electrical and technical operations. By empowering women to take on these critical roles, Western Railway is not just contributing to gender equality, but also enhancing the operational efficiency of Mumbai’s vital rail network. The move has been lauded as an exemplary step towards a more inclusive workplace, fostering innovation and performance excellence. As the women-led team takes charge of crucial power maintenance, their success not only highlights the capabilities of these pioneering women but also underscores the significant societal impact of equal opportunity in technical sectors. This initiative marks a significant evolution in the workplace culture at Western Railway, reinforcing the message that when provided with equal opportunities, women can excel and drive progress in any domain.
