In a strategic move to address potential disruptions to air traffic, authorities at Begumpet airport have urged the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to redirect the proposed elevated skyway project between Paradise Circle and Suchitra Junction.

In response, the MoD has recommended the construction of an underpass along a specific stretch, safeguarding the smooth operation of air traffic and addressing concerns raised by airport authorities. The envisioned elevated skyway project, originally planned by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) on NH-44, aimed to alleviate traffic congestion along this critical route, witnessing over 1.5 lakh vehicles daily. However, concerns regarding the impact on flight operations prompted a reassessment of the project’s alignment.
Under the revised proposal, the underpass is suggested to be built between Paradise and Tadbund junctions, with the remaining stretch from Tadbund to Suchitra Junction designated as the skyway segment. This collaborative effort involves a joint inspection by key stakeholders, including the SCB CEO, DEO, and Local Military Authority, to finalise the underpass location. The MoD, cognizant of the need for seamless coordination, directed the HMDA to adhere to Air Force norms and guidelines, as well as Indian Road Congress specifications, during the redesigning process. The HMDA is tasked with ensuring that the proposed underpass is monitored by a project management consultant (PMC) and constructed with the flexibility to accommodate potential future military requirements, such as runway extension.
To facilitate the underpass construction, the Board of Officers (BoO) has been assigned the responsibility of demarcating the exact location, ensuring precision before excavation commences. Additionally, the HMDA is mandated to seek a No Objection Certificate (NoC) from civil aviation authorities due to the project’s proximity to the airport. The MoD emphasised the installation of view cutters to obstruct the inside view of Begumpet airport.
This strategic realignment aligns with the central government’s clearance for elevated skyways in Secunderabad Cantonment, benefiting over five lakh residents. Underground tunnels will be incorporated to prevent interference with flight operations, and the HMDA will undertake the necessary blueprint redesign, ensuring minimal environmental impact. The move reflects a concerted effort to balance urban development with aviation safety concerns, highlighting the significance of integrated planning in infrastructure projects.
