AIESL Nagpur MRO has completed India’s first installation of an advanced Nitrogen Generation System on a Boeing 737-800, finishing the retrofit on an Air India Express aircraft two days ahead of schedule.
The modification was carried out at Air India Engineering Services Limited’s Mihan unit in Nagpur on aircraft VT-AXM. With the installation, the facility has become the first MRO centre in India capable of installing the system on Boeing 737-800 aircraft, according to the report by Times of India – Nagpur.
A Nitrogen Generation System is an aircraft safety system designed to reduce the risk of fire or explosion in the centre fuel tank. It does this by replacing oxygen-rich air with nitrogen-enriched air inside the tank. The installation formed part of a complex aircraft modification assigned to the Nagpur team.
The work was completed two days before the stipulated deadline. Air India Express officials appreciated the AIESL Nagpur team’s coordination and technical expertise in executing the modification, the report said. The early completion marks a capability milestone for the Mihan facility, which can now undertake this advanced safety-related work on Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
The development is relevant to Nagpur’s role as an aviation maintenance location. AIESL’s Mihan unit is positioned to handle specialised aircraft engineering work, and the new capability expands the range of modifications it can carry out domestically. The report said the development is expected to strengthen the facility’s role in India’s growing aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul sector.
The installation also connects a local technical achievement with the broader effort to strengthen domestic MRO capacity. The report described it as a step towards the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, as advanced aircraft safety modifications can be undertaken at an Indian facility rather than being dependent on capability elsewhere.
For Air India Express, the completed retrofit adds the Nitrogen Generation System to VT-AXM while keeping the aircraft modification ahead of the assigned schedule. For AIESL Nagpur, the project demonstrates its ability to coordinate a complex modification involving specialised systems, technical expertise and an operational aircraft.
The Mihan unit’s expanded capability is expected to support further advanced aircraft safety modifications and contribute to the facility’s participation in India’s aviation maintenance sector. The report did not specify the number of additional aircraft scheduled for similar installations or provide details of further retrofit timelines.
