Ahmedabad Water Cut Hits 5 Zones After Narmada Supply Disruption

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation will curtail water supply across the Central, West, North, East and South zones on October 25 after disruptions in the raw water reaching its Kotarpur water treatment plant. The civic body announced the reduction on Saturday and asked residents in affected areas to store water and use it judiciously until normal supply resumes.

The disruption has been linked to severe fluctuations in water levels at the Ahmedabad civic body’s head regulator on the Narmada main canal. The canal is the primary source of raw water for the Kotarpur facility, which treats and supplies water to distribution stations serving large parts of the city.

According to civic officials, treatment operations at Kotarpur on Saturday were limited to the volume of raw water available at the plant. With the facility’s operational capacity significantly compromised, the distribution stations connected to the five zones will receive reduced supplies on October 25.

The affected areas cover a broad part of Ahmedabad’s municipal supply network. The announcement does not specify the extent of the reduction in individual neighbourhoods, the revised timing of local supply, or the number of households expected to be affected. Residents in the five zones have therefore been advised to make arrangements in advance rather than rely on regular supply schedules.

The incident highlights the dependence of Ahmedabad’s urban water network on the uninterrupted movement of raw water through the Narmada canal system. A disruption before treatment begins affects the entire chain: the treatment plant can process only the water available to it, while downstream distribution stations must operate with reduced volumes. This makes the head regulator and the raw-water connection to Kotarpur critical points in the city’s supply infrastructure.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation said the technical issues were unforeseen and that its teams were monitoring the situation. Civic authorities are working to restore normal operations as quickly as possible, but the announcement did not provide a specific timeline for a full return to regular supply.

Residents in the Central, West, North, East and South zones have been asked to store adequate water before the reduced supply takes effect and to consume it carefully. The next update from the civic body on the status of the raw water flow, Kotarpur plant operations and restoration of regular distribution will determine when normal supply schedules can resume.
