Ahmedabad Vande Bharat Shifts To Sabarmati Hub

Ahmedabad: Rail connectivity in Ahmedabad is set for a significant operational change as the Ahmedabad Vande Bharat service to Okha will begin operating from Sabarmati station instead of Ahmedabad Junction from mid-August. The revised arrangement also introduces a new stop at Ambli Road, extending access to one of the city’s fastest-growing urban corridors and strengthening suburban connectivity.

The operational shift reflects a broader effort by Indian Railways to align premium passenger services with the city’s evolving transport landscape. Sabarmati has increasingly emerged as an important multimodal transport hub, supported by ongoing investments in railway infrastructure and improved integration with regional mobility networks. Under the revised schedule, the semi-high-speed service will originate and terminate at Sabarmati (Jail Side) station, while continuing its regular six-day-a-week operations. Ambli Road will receive its first halt for a Vande Bharat service, offering passengers from western Ahmedabad more convenient access without travelling to the city’s traditional central railway station. Urban mobility experts say the decision recognises changing travel patterns as residential and commercial development expands along the SG Highway and surrounding neighbourhoods. Areas such as Bodakdev, Prahlad Nagar, South Bopal, Shela and nearby localities have witnessed sustained urban growth over the past decade, increasing demand for improved regional rail connectivity.

The addition of Ambli Road as a boarding point is expected to reduce first-mile travel time for many passengers while easing pressure on Ahmedabad Junction. Better distribution of passenger traffic across multiple stations can improve operational efficiency and support smoother movement within the city’s rail network, particularly during peak travel periods. Transport planners also view the move as part of a wider transition towards decentralised railway operations in rapidly growing metropolitan areas. Rather than concentrating premium services at a single terminal, expanding access through strategically located stations can encourage greater use of public transport and strengthen integration with city bus, metro and other last-mile mobility options.

The operational changes coincide with Ahmedabad’s continuing investment in modern transport infrastructure, including railway upgrades, metro expansion and multimodal interchange facilities. Together, these initiatives are intended to improve accessibility while supporting lower-emission mobility choices that contribute to more sustainable urban development. Railway authorities have indicated that the existing operating schedule will remain in effect until the revised arrangements are implemented in August. Once the changes take effect, passengers travelling between Ahmedabad and Okha are expected to benefit from improved station accessibility and a more distributed rail network designed to meet the city’s expanding mobility needs.
