Ahmedabad has launched a new phase of civic infrastructure and environmental initiatives with projects worth approximately ₹405 crore, combining urban development, large-scale afforestation and expanded public green spaces. The programme reflects a growing emphasis on integrating ecological measures into city planning as Ahmedabad continues to manage rapid urban growth and climate-related challenges.
The latest round of investments includes municipal infrastructure works alongside a mass tree plantation campaign carried out under the national Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam initiative. Officials said more than 12.5 million saplings were planted across the Gandhinagar parliamentaryregion during the campaign, with local authorities positioning afforestation as a long-term strategy to improve environmental resilience. As part of the programme, Ahmedabad also inaugurated 101 new oxygen parks designed to expand the city’s green network. Municipal authorities said these parks are intended to improve air quality, increase urban biodiversity and create accessible public spaces for recreation and community activities. A digital publication documenting the new parks has also been released to support public awareness and future planning. Urban planners increasingly view neighbourhood green spaces as critical infrastructure rather than aesthetic additions. Expanding tree cover can help reduce the urban heat island effect, improve stormwater management and enhance public health by encouraging outdoor activity. Native tree species, which require comparatively lower maintenance and support local ecosystems, are also considered more resilient under changing climatic conditions.
During the event, senior government representatives also encouraged greater adoption of rooftop solar systems, highlighting decentralised renewable energy as an important element of sustainable urban development. Energy experts note that wider deployment of rooftop solar can reduce pressure on electricity networks, lower carbon emissions and contribute to more resilient cities when combined with energy-efficient buildings. The ₹405 crore package includes multiple municipal development projects intended to strengthen civic infrastructure alongside environmental improvements. While specific projects span different sectors, urban development specialists emphasise that integrating transport, public spaces and ecological assets can deliver broader long-term benefits than isolated infrastructure investments.
