Ahmedabad Student Loses ₹9.66 Lakh in Online Task Scam

An Ahmedabad BBA student from Naroda allegedly lost ₹9.66 lakh after cyber fraudsters promised easy earnings through part-time online tasks and later pressured him to make a series of prepaid deposits, according to a report by Divya Bhaskar. The student has approached the cybercrime branch, which has registered a complaint and begun investigating the transactions and digital trails.

The fraud began with an offer to complete tasks from home for money. The student was added to a group where discussions about the tasks took place and was sent a link to rate different products on Amazon, the report said. The work was presented as a simple way to earn through online activity.

After the student completed the initial task, the alleged fraudsters paid him ₹160 as an incentive. This initial payment appears to have been used to build trust before the group introduced a different set of tasks requiring advance payments.

On the following day, the student was told that the next assignments were prepaid tasks. The alleged fraudsters claimed that putting money into these tasks would generate multiple returns. Believing the promise, the student first deposited ₹1,124. After the task was shown as completed, the system displayed what appeared to be a substantial profit, according to the report.

The group then allegedly increased the amounts demanded through a series of prepaid tasks. Over time, the student deposited a total of ₹9.66 lakh into different bank accounts. The report did not specify the number of accounts involved or the precise period over which the payments were made.

When the student attempted to withdraw the money he had deposited along with the displayed profits, the alleged fraudsters demanded further payments. This led him to realise that he had been deceived. He then contacted the cybercrime branch and submitted a formal complaint.

Police have begun examining the bank transactions and digital footprints connected with the case. The investigation is focused on identifying and apprehending what the report described as an interstate cybercrime gang. The identities of the alleged accused and the current status of any arrests were not provided in the supplied report.

The case highlights how task scams can combine a small initial payment with fabricated digital profits and escalating deposit demands. In this incident, the complaint was filed only after the student was unable to withdraw the money and was asked to pay more. Further details will depend on the cybercrime branch’s investigation into the recipient accounts and the digital communications used to contact the student.
